If you think about food or prefer carbohydrates
you may be showing signs of a very common but almost completely misunderstood
brain based health problem. The problem involves an area deep within
the brain that controls and regulates many of our most basic behaviors
like hunger, thirst, sleep and sexual arousal. The central focus is on
an area of the brain called the hypothalamic / pituitary (H/P) axis.Problems
in this area can be called Hypothalmic Pituitary Dysfunction or HPD.
One of the earliest indicators of a problem in
this area of the brain is a tendency for people to actually think about
food.People who have a normally functioning H/P axis simply select food,
eat and get on with their life without really thinking much about food.Additionally,
a preference for carbohydrates is characteristic of HPD.Craving for
carbohydrates and sweets is an obvious sign but even a strong preference
for starchy food can be early evidence that trouble may be brewing in
this area of the brain. The interplay between consuming partially hydrogenated
fats as well as other food additives, over consumption of refined carbohydrates
and the presence of genetic vulnerabilities is thought, by some, to
be the cause of HPD
This H/P axis has been implicated in a wide range
of conditions from ADD/ADHD, Eating Disorders, Insomnia, PMS, Depression,
Manic Depression, Seizure Disorders, Fibromyalgia, Attempted Suicide
and the diseases of Modern Western Living which are as follows: Type
II Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Hardening of the Arteries, Obesity, High
Blood Pressure, Osteo Arthritis and Migraine headaches.
This is obviously a very impressive list of apparently
very different conditions. The central common thread is neurotransmitters.Neurotransmitters
are small simple molecules which our bodies use to regulate global functions.Global
functions are functions that effect our entire body.Hormones, for example,
are either directly or indirectly regulated by neurotransmitters.
Some physicians and researchers have tested,
monitored and collected data regarding neurotransmitter levels in a
wide variety of conditions. They have identified trends of neurotransmitter
imbalances characteristic of the conditions named above and a limited
few have used NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATION TO CORRECT THESE IMBALANCES
WHITH A HIGH DEGREE OF SUCCESS.Some of the most popular applications
of this approach have been in the successful treatment of Obesity, Fibromyalgia,
PMS and Depression.
At Mills River Family Chiropractic we utilize
a readily available, reliable, non-invasive and relatively inexpensive
urine test to discover these imbalances in neurotransmitter levels.Once
discovered, various chiropractic techniques, including nutritional supplementation
are employed to bring about a correction in the functionality of these
deep brain regions. The long awaited improvement in symptoms and a restoration
of normal neurotransmitter levels are evidence of success.
